Journal Entry, July 26, 2021

Last July 14, 2021, I had a worse bike accident in a pouring rain going home from work.

I slid and crashed face down, so terrible that my scrub pants was ripped at the left knee. Feeling the body pain, I very slowly stood up, picked up my bike, limped and sat on the sidewalk away from the main road, and inspected my bike for damages. I refused help (from the Valle Verde security guards) and especially disregarded ER because I was being “atapang ababae.”

My bike (RedOne) was all good, mind you. (No wonder it costs a fortune.) The chain got derailed but there were no visible scratches and dents elsewhere. I then felt something (aside from the rain) dripping from my left cheek down to my mouth and neck. I was bleeding.

Boosted by adrenaline, I got up, hurriedly pulled my bike as I was iika-ika, and courageously run-walked across C5. I stopped at the bridge to rest and check my face with my phone’s camera. I was shocked at how badly my face was wounded, bruised, and bleeding. I replaced my (bloody!) face mask with a spare black cloth mask and resumed walking my bike home, 2 excruciating kilometers to go, under a soaking downpour. (Good thing RedOne is carbon; it helped that it’s light.)

All in all I suffered: wounds on my left cheek, upper lip, left foot, and right hand; a cut in my upper inner lip; swollen gums; and severe bruises and wounds on both knees, left leg, and right thigh.

My arms were spared from injuries because of my raincoat and I landed face down, leaving my head okay and my helmet in tact. I even reported to work the following day (*via a taxi) with all my fresh wounds and bruises covered with gauzes. Unfortunately, I didn’t function well and normal that day as I was limping in severe pain. I was also unable to carry stuff, and I can’t even eat and drink properly.

Thankfully, all my wounds and bruises are almost fully healed as of today and I’ll be back to my bike-to-work routine in no time. I sincerely thank the Lord for my countless second chances in life.

Moral of the story: (Learn to) SLOW DOWN.
